I saw Barbara Black give a lecture on saving time by quilting smarter, and she referenced a tutorial on her blog to what she called the X-block, but is also known as Old Italian:

The Old Italian block is one of Barbara’s favorites and if you search her website for “Italian” you can find other examples, including an antique top made from the block that includes 1876 Centennial fabric!
