Did you get any attachments with it? You have a straight stitch foot on it. You will break a needle if you try to zigzag with that foot. You will need a high shank foot. There are high shank adapters, but I think you will need a special foot as it looks like you may have what is considered a left homing machine. It looks like you may have the zigzag needle plate. Some of these machines came with another straight stitch plate.

The Centennial Dial-N-Sew manual that I have shows a lever that will allow the needle position to move so that straight stitching can be in the middle, left or right, that I do not see on your machine.
