If you haven't yet decided on a pattern, let me suggest one I found for a large throw that uses a focus fabric. Of course adding more blocks will make it bigger.
Plaidalicious PDF pattern (sweettreasuresquilts.com). Pattern includes three sizes and looks very easy to do. I bought it this morning and will add it to my project line.
