my grandparents had dozens of foster children in the 50's (always someone there to play with!) and she made many of quilts from mens suiting, just one patch quilts, backed with flannel and nicely tied with yarn. I still have one. Sewed on her Singer treadle.
It may have been the dark fabric that drew her because she had a wringer washer and a clothes line, so doubt they were washed.
That would disqualify wool from patchwork for me.
