Welcome to the board from down the road in Dallas. I started quilting at about your age, too. I had sewn clothes as a teenager, so had some experience with sewing. I found lots of support from a local quilt shop that has since closed.
Two things I've gotten better at is cutting and the 1/4" seam. Those were the two things that were not as good as I wished in my first quilt. Two things that helped were a weight on my ruler and watching a the
Jordan's cut fabric and a 1/4" foot for my sewing machine.
My first quilt was a disappearing nine patch. I used two charm packs (5" precut squares) for the focus fabric and solid blue and white fabric. I had it quilted by the same quilt shop who helped. It wasn't perfect, but I was still very pleased.
