I just made the Fat Quarter Fancy Star quilt, a free pattern from Sew Can She:

The pattern uses paired 6"and 5 1/2" squares of print and background fabric - but these could be reduced to 5" and 4.5" squares, to get 2 smaller blocks from a layer cake square.
