Can you pinpoint what it is about the fold-stitch-cut technique that bothers you?
I also use the (mini) Folded Corners ruler. It eliminates the drawing of a diagonal line, which is the part of that technique that I prefer to avoid -- it's so time-consuming. As for simply folding the corner square, I can't see the fold line adequately. I also avoid HST techniques that require drawing a line.
