I've drawn it out on graph paper; just can't quite wrap my head around it. But then, I'm taking cold meds, which I'm sure doesn't help.

Yes indeed!! ... Graph paper is the best way to go.
Draw it out, as you would like it to be when finished, and sewn together in the quilt.
Then, be sure to add 1/4" to each side of each piece to allow for the seam allowances.
