This is how I would break down the block.

Squares in each of the four corners

Four flying geese

Center square

Block size is your choice.

Example: For a 12 inch block (finished)

Cut 4 squares at 3 1/2 inches (finish at 3 inches)

Make 4 Flying Geese 3 1/2 x 6 1/2 (finish at 3x6 inches)

Cut Center Square at 6 1/2 inches (finish at 6 inches Square)
