My folks did that - it was great to watch the birds. Several had great personalities! You get to know them after a while. But my dad had to fix the feeder so the rats wouldn't get into it. You can't do anything about the seed on the ground the birds throw down, but the rats would take over the feeder. So my dad made posts that they couldn't climb.
