When you say yellow and black strips, I think of this quilt, which is very attractive. You would have to buy at least 1/2 yd. of solid white and 1/2 a yd. of solid black for this to work. It looks complicated, but in reality is easy to make.

Or if you want something really easy to make you can make something like this by just alternating the black and yellow srips on the outside strip, and instead of using a center 5" charm square, you would substitute that with a 2 1/2" block you cut off your strips, and the surround the center block with a white 1 1/2" strip as shown. You would still need to get some solid white background fabric for surrounding your center square block, and samm white border around the whole quilt. (maybe 1 1/2 to 2 yards of white) Also, it is not necessary to add the colored fabric borders she has on the quilt. Would look just as good without.
