I made the first block from A Quilting Life and am not sure I like it. It's huge - 18.5". Since I'm cutting my own strips, I'm considering scrapping this one and using 2" strips instead of 2.5". If my math is correct that would reduce the size to 15.5".

A bunch of people on the Facebook group are doing just that. Using 2” strips to yield a smaller block. I think your math works out the same as what I saw on FB.
