I don't know the machine .... butttt ..... when that sort of a thing happens to me, the first thing I do is unthread the machine fully, both top and bottom. Then re-thread. Sometimes that's all that is needed.

My end conclusion has usually been that I had something threaded wrong!

With it being such a new-to-you machine, per chance it's as simple as that?
