Suggestion ... unwind a bunch of the thread and see if the problem continues on? or disappears?
Could it be that as the plastic was being taken off the spool, that you scratched the thread somehow?
Or dropped it and scraped it against something?
Or scratched the needle across the spool? or some pins?
It doesn't take much to damage the thread ...
