I think the cleanliness varies greatly by store. I've been to some that were shockingly filthy, but not all are that way. Two that I visit (although I rarely go in them at all), and are closing, are beautifully lit, clean and well organized. I've had nothing but good interactions with the staff. They are definitely not all sewers, but they have all been pleasant.

Their biggest problem, IMO, is that they tried to accommodate every possible craft and hobby. Woodworking, painting, cake decorating, paper crafts, crocheting/knitting, children's crafts, jewelry making, home decor, etc. It's too much inventory to keep in stock, and with the exception of the yarn, I rarely saw anyone in those aisles. They'd have been better off to focus on fabric and notions, and let the other things stay in Michaels and Hobby Lobby.
