I sincerely doubt of any of use gets the measuring tape out to pinpoint to the closest 1" of fabric when it arrives at our house. That's good enough is most likely the answer. The majority of patterns allow a couple inches of extra fabric anyway. Where do you think all the scrap fabric comes from? I would not complain.
