I prefer to lay the quilt out on the floor and pin the binding in place. I fold the excess binding on my thumb and little finger to make a "skein." Then I hold it together with a "dewy-bobber" (elastic pony tail holder). It stays together as I sew, then I pull enough from the skein to pin the next side.
Is it weird I knew what you meant by "dewy-bobber"? Way back in the 60's we had a sack of toys called deelie-bobbers, little plastic rounds that you could build with. For some reason, my sisters and I started calling our pony tail holders deelie-bobbers, and still do. Prior to that instead of rubber bands, we called them rinder-binders.
