I've done that for sure. In fact, we were reupholstering my husband's 65 Mustang's seat back in the day. The vinyl ripped a bit when we were stretching it over the foam and the white foam showed thru the red vinyl just a bit. My husband was fussing about it so I said "Hang on. I can fix that". I went and got my red sharpie and colored the little bit of foam red. It didn't show at all! My husband was really happy.
