I really like log cabins too. A new layout for me, was starting with a light/dark HST and then adding strips to make a 1/4 log cabin block. it looks really neat and I found it to be faster than the traditional.

Another one I really like is a great leader and ender. Sew a light and a dark 2 1/2 inch square together. then add a 2 1/2 x 4 1/2 inch rectangle. Make 4 sets, being sure to keep the orientation the same. Then sew the sets together, keeping the light squares on the corners. The pic is 4 blocks put together with a narrow sashing and cornerstone. Not necessary but it meant I didn't have to match seams and my eyes stopped going squirrelly This pattern looks very intricate when set on point.

I probably have a bajillion more but these two came to mind . Scrap quilts are my favourite because I get bogged down matching colours.
