We missed the first sale of the year here. The bin was always empty and we didn't bother to ask. They usually have some pretty sweet deals around here for buy a minimum amount of groceries and get a turkey at a really low price. Our soda pop usually covers the price point!
One year (still back in Seattle) we were chatting with a guy who had a big cart full of after Thanksgiving markdown turkeys. I think they were $0.69/lb no limit! He said he ground them (including skin) -- ground turkey I think back then was 3.99 a pound? Is basically $5 last time I looked.
An empty turkey, even a big one is really not that bad for cooking time or effort. Is all the sides and things that go with Thanksgiving that make it a big effort.
We eat several turkeys a year. We did get a turkey fryer set up and haven't used it yet. I can cook a small (12 lb) on the charcoal weber, we can do bigger on the electric smoker. And there is the oven too, of course!
