Those sound like measurements for no-waste blocks (where there's little to no trimming after sewing the cut pieces together.)
If they list finished or trim-to sizes for the flying geese and pinwheel blocks, can you find another method (Tucker/180 Tools) or such that has you cut more standard dimensions then trim to size?
