I gifted myself a new ironing board cover, and was just trying it out. Not so good news is that when I removed the old cover, the metal frame was a bit rusted. Rather than purchase a new board, I'll sand the rusty spots and spray paint a new surface. For now, the old cover stays on so that the rustiness doesn't come through to the new cover.
Something else you can do while you wait is put a layer of aluminum foil on top of the rusty spot under your ironing board cover(s). :-)
