Trying to picture in my head and then sketching on graph paper I finally figured out that you need to trim the one .5" trim on the 10 by 2.5" strip that you cut from the layer cake, right? The 7.5"x 2.5" would not need to be trimmed as the way the row (sashing if you will of the trimmed layer cake) in between is constructed.

This looks like this might start with layer cake pieces, but dark background and thinner strips and maybe thicker sashing. https://www.etsy.com/listing/4359034...-quilt-pattern It doesn't indicate that it starts with layer cake and the blocks are twisted rather than all going the same direction.
