A first time post definitely comes across as suspicious. If the link was malicious or was promoting something that made someone money or other benefit I would completely agree with you that it could be classified as spam.
A bit about me, I am honing my craft in website development. I am a father of 2 girls and a husband. I have a full-time job and am dabbling in web design to learn a new skill. QuiltButler.com just launched last weekend so my thought process was it would be appropriate to announce to a quilting forum about a free tool designed specifically to help new quilters coming into the hobby and to do it on a quilting forum in the section titled Links and Resources.
