I've read two incredible books, both by Jeannette Wall.
The Glass Castle and Unbroke Horses
The first is about her growing up in the 40's and 50's and the second is about her grandmother in the early 1900's
I also loved The Elm Creek series, but my favorite was the Lost Quilter, how a slave survived in the 1800's.
