Bull Durham bags used to be made of white cotton and contained loose tobacco and papers for rolling your own cigarettes. During WWII you could get a nickel bag that had enough tobacco and papers for 5 cigarettes. Mom's big Saturday night out was that her and four other girls from the boarding house that she lived in would each chip in a penny and buy a nickel bag. They'd walk to the town square, smoke their one cigarette for the week then walk home. Each week a different girl got to keep the bag. They'd take the stitching out (but saved it), wash the bag and hang it in the sunlight to bleach out. Then they used it in quilts. It was approximately 2" by 5".
