Having something with a really strong chemical smell would be of concern to me. Don't know if this will work, but it shouldn't wreck it. Try putting it in a suitably sized bin bag and throw in a couple of handfuls of bicarbonate of soda tie up the bag and leave it overnight...bicarb is an excellent sucker up of odours.
