It was very light weight, but gave the bag a little more body and more professional look. I was just wondering if the fusible part was important (like if you couldn't get fusible could you use regular batting).

I have the fusible web on lining and exterior. I have made one without quilting and it is just fine. Gets used every day by a teenager.
I think it is just a matter of what you like. But if you don't use fusible you should quilt, it will hold up better and look more finished (batting will probably sag over time and useage)
