I would suggest you look for a Brother or Janome machine and buy it from a dealer rather than a Walmart or Joan's etc. They will come with warranties and often free mainteance for a year. You will always have someone to give you service. Singer, late models are not as good as their early ones. Elna is also a machine that is good and perhaps a bit less expensive.
