I work at a quilt shop and to cut a fat quarter we cut 1/2 yard, turn it and cut it on the fold---then we sell it. I have NEVER heard of cutting off to selvage to make the fabric exactly 18X22. In fact, we usually cut our 1/2 yard part at 19", so it is a generous FQ.

I bought FQs at a shop not too far from me recently and they were cut so "warped" that I ended up with 16 1/2 X 21 when I squared up the fabric. I was really mad!!!
Marcia,
That would make me really mad, too. I wonder if someone is buying selvages from some quilt shops and that's why hers was cut. I'm not finding the selvage pieces in any of the fat quarters like I used to locally.
It's funny - we were looking at some FQs the other night at guild, and most had selvages, but none had IDENTIFYING selvages. That is, anything that would have said "Timeless Treasures" or whatever was cut off, but the plain selvages were there. We were wondering whether they were sold either from the fabric co. or Joann's so that they COULDN'T be identified. Any thoughts?
