One more story. I was invited to a school friend's once for lunch. This was a bit awkward, as her parents happened to be physicians who had a joint practice together - and they turned out to be my mother's gynecologists! So of course my mother wanted me to be on my best behavior. And I was the kind of kid who wanted adults to like me, anyway.

So I get to my friend's house, and her mother says, "I hope you're hungry!" and I say, "Oh yes, I am!"

And she serves a 7-layer salad. I hated almost all vegetables at that point. Cucumbers and carrots were okay, but not all the rest of what was in that salad. I managed to separate every piece of shredded cheese from those veggies to try to get something in me, but there was no way to fake liking it. I kept hoping it wasn't the main course, but that was all there was.

And she kept saying, "I don't know why you wouldn't like it. I put everything in it." And there was no polite way to say I hated salad, hated all the things she put in it, so I just kept smiling bravely and assuring her I liked it but that I must not have been as hungry as I'd thought I was.

I always wondered if my mother put her up to it, thinking I might eat vegetables for a friend's parent. I mean, who seves salad (just vegetables, except for the bits of cheese) to a kid as the main lunch course?
