Oh goodness, you had quite a learning day and right on all. Whenever I can't quite get something on the machine, I will hand piece and then stitch over the top to make sure it is secure. My hand stitching is good but after having to mend my first 2 hand pieced quilts, in my mind, they now must be machine pieced and if the only way is hand sew first and machine over top for good measure but they do hold up and wear well. You can't skip on that basting. I spend so much time basting but it's so worth it in long run.
