It sure sounds like a yo-yo. They can have a backing attached to help stabilize them and make them much sturdier but there's no batting in them. They're used as decorative bed spreads more than quilts, but they are beautiful. You can make your own template or purchase them, but it's just a circle, turn the edge in a scant 1/4 and put a running stitch in by hand, pull it tight and secure it. When you have enough of them you just whip stitch them together. Yo-Yo's have also been used to make purses, doll quilts, dolls, etc. Good luck.
