When you FMQ, I don't set the stitch length any differently than what my machine automatically comes on with. You adjust the stitch length by the speed at which you move the fabric under the needle.
The BSR booklet says specifically to lower the stitch length to 1 to 1.5 for stippling. The BSR automatically does the stitch length for you when you FMQ, so it's not the speed you move the fabric.
