I am very new at all this quilting stuff....but something that has come in handy for me so far... is to thread several needles onto the spool of thread..tie a knot in the end...and whenever you need one...simply take the knotted end and one of the needles...wind off as much as thread as needed...Make sure that all the needles that you arent using stay close to the spool itself..break the thread where needed..DON'T forget to tie a knot in the end.
