Metal doesn't affect the computer. Strong magnets will. When I had my Kenmore I bought pre-wounded bobbins. They are filled better and hold much more thread. Also, if you wish to fill them yourself, you can try to use 50 or 60 wt thread. You can fit in much more thread than with 40wt.
