Thanks everyone!!! It was an easy process. The cabinets did have a light finish on them. The only thing I did was wash them with murphy's oil soap. I used Mini Wax Gel Stain ( yellow container). I applied 4 coats with foam brush. It takes about 10 hours to dry. I did not use any polyurethene so the gel gives it the high glossed look.
The biggest factor is the drying time. I checked every hour and would paint again to help get the look I was going for. I also waited a few hours and same thing.
In the beginning after the first coat I thought I'd made a big mistake doing this! but after I began to add coats it started looking better. Still want to do maybe another light coat when I do trim work. So like I had said before it takes alot of patience. I wish I had taken a before picture so you guys can see. But I didn't think of it.
But I do recommend you giving it a try before ripping out and starting new first. Who knows you all just might like it too. I did but was unsure of hubby. And he loved it!! Not only was it easy it cost me $24.00 for stain gel and brushes. You can't beat that price!! Good luck to all who try!!!

I need to do mine and have been thinking about doing it for a couple of years. The wood is real nice, but the finish is all scratched up.
