jenny, try both ways. Either way is fine, it is just personally ease and preference. One thing that I would do though is to put a small dot 1/4 inch away from the corner that fits into the 'y' seam and make sure that dot is in the seam of the previous sewn diamonds. The more you do of this type of piecing the easier it gets so just practice.
