That is what I would do! I search sites for better prices, get the order ready so I can see shipping, and then buy from the site with the best price. I usually use a solid Kona cotton for the backing (Joann's coupon put to good use!)
No matter how gorgeous a quilt would be when finished, I need to know who is getting it before I buy a specific line. My stash is full of patriotic prints and great deals on backing. My focus fabric stash is full of great deals from closeouts, sales, etc. My personal "absolutely love that fabric" purchases usually are Asian fabrics,which will go for personal quilts, IF I EVER FIND THE TIME TO MAKE THEM!
