I think because of the embroidery it needs to be pre washed. That being said, I NeVER prewash and use Color catchers religiously. I like working with the crispy fabric and I LOVE the wrinkles after washing. As you can see, my quilts are pretty complex with lots of lights/brights/darks. If you wash with the color catchers you will not have3 a prob - not one, but a few - I use 5 or 6 at a time. You can also use plain muslin, it soaks up lose dye in the water.
