My daughter has family members highly allergic to cats so every quilt I give her is machine washed and promptly delivered. She then pops it into the washer and washes it again in her soap to be sure there isn't anything in there that will bother her kids. Yes, they definitely should know if there is an animal in the home and even a smoker as smoke is nasty for some of us.
