Usually someone will post a link to the new mystery in the previous mystery, as well as Judy will start the new link. So some kind soul will post a link here for the new mystery that starts tomorrow. You can also do a search for "#15 mystery" and it will probably take you to the new site.

Secondly, I live in the beautiful Kingdom of Fife, on the East coast, half-way between the city of Edinburgh and St Andrews (famous for its golf courses). In fact, only about 10 miles away from Lower Largo as mentioned by Thimblebug. (Lower Largo was the home of the guy who wrote the Robinson Crusoe story.)

So potted geography lesson: Scotland is the lumpy, bumpy bit stuck on to the top of England lol.

You can loosely divide a map of Scotland into a giant 9-patch. I say loosely cos the top row of three would encompass about half of the map all by itself...

So, top left square would be the Highlands, famed in song and story. Here be mountains. The biggest in Britain, in fact. (JeanneS may be able to show photos from her recent trip here.)

Top middle square is more mountains, the Cairngorms, with the queen's summer house Balmoral hidden away in the glens.

Top right are the Grampian mountains, and Loch Ness with its monster. Around about the bottom right of that square would be the city of Aberdeen, home of another member whose name escapes me just now (sorry ).

Bottom row represents the Border country, hills rather than mountains, and moors. Scene of many an historical skirmish between the English and the Scots. In fact the town of Berwick-upon-Tweed on the east coast has changed hands between the two countries about a dozen times!

Bottom left - remember the American jet that was brought down about 20 years ago? Lockerbie is in the bottom left square.

Middle row - this covers the flat bit in between the mountains and the borders. Usually referred to as the Lowlands. Lowlanders and Highlanders have special gaelic names for each other..... lol.

Middle left would be the city of Glasgow, probably the largest city in Scotland.

Middle middle is a beautiful area called the Trossachs. I only included this cos I wanted to say "middle middle" .

Middle Right - this would be the capital city of Edinburgh, and also Fife just to the north. As the crow flies, I live about 10 miles north of Edinburgh, but because there's a blooming big river in between, I have to drive about 20 miles inland to get to a bridge .

That big river I mentioned is the southern boundary of Fife (the 'Firth of Forth'), and theres another big river to the north (the 'Firth of Tay'). The land in between is called the Kingdom of Fife. The whole of Fife would fit inside the metropolis area of Los Angeles.

So thats your lesson for today.....

K

In Scotland it's traditional to complain about the weather. However i'm eternally grateful that we don't get your kind of winds here. Glad to hear everyone came through that last big blow in one piece....
I was trying to find the 'like' button! LOL!

LOL, Siodach, thanks for the wonderful geography lesson. I spent an hour over this morning's coffee going back and forth between your post and a map of Scotland, looking up cities and mountains. What fun. It made me want even more to visit, and you know what, I'll remember your 9-square picture longer than reading a book.
