2026 blocks of the month
#1
a few members expressed interest in the Block of the Month activity we used to do here. I decided to revive it. If we get enough participation I'll keep it going. If there is little or no interest, I'll retire it again.
There is no charge. All the patterns recommended will be free from sites that do not charge fees or require people to sign up for memberships or anything else.
The only cost to us is our time and the fabric/tools we use to make the blocks.
This is the way it worked before:
Rules are a buzzkill, we know. BUT there are a few things we all need to know and understand ahead of time so we can have as much fun as possible when we quilt along with our BOM buddies. So ... here they are.
1. All registered and active members of the board are eligible to request a spot on a "pickers' list".
2. Pickers will be responsible for either a link to existing directions for a block, or for providing directions for the block they've chosen. Lessons learned from "the old days":
When choosing a block, please check copyrights and terms of use set forth by the authors of the instructions. Pickers are strongly encouraged to pick only blocks from the Public Domain and instructions that do not place strict or severe limits on what we can do with the blocks we make using those instructions.
As individual quilters, WE are responsible for making sure we read, understand, and comply with those copyright/terms of use statements.
3. Anyone who sees the list and likes the blocks is invited to make them. However, only registered members of the board will be able to post pictures of the blocks they've made.
4. Pick and make any blocks you like from any lists you like. No matter how long ago a block was picked, you are still invited to post pictures when you make one. Just make sure to post your pics in the pictures thread for that block.
5. There will be two threads for each block. Both of them will be in the BOM section of the board. One thread for directions and discussion, and the other thread for pictures of the finished blocks. For the sake of keeping things sane all other threads will be moved or deleted. The selection should be posted as close as possible to the 1st of each month.
When posting a new BOM, please make sure to use the appropriate titles, such as:
"October 1, 2007 - Drunkard's Path - Directions & Discussion"
and
"October 1, 2007 - Drunkard's Path - Photos"
5. If a posted block doesn't interest you, feel free to skip it.
6. Again - You don't have to be a registered member or on the lists to play along. The lists simply tell us which registered members have volunteered to take a turn selecting a block. Any registered board member can volunteer for a turn. Simply send a PM to PatriceJ, who will update the list.
6. Our Block of the Month activities are NOT swaps.
7. Have fun! Quilting is fun and Quilter's Rock!!!!!

- If you provide your own directions you must be the true author. Please don't copy from another source.
- Do not link to photos posted off-site. Photos must be uploaded to the QB. (Linked photos can disappear from the source, which ruins the whole thread.)
- We all have different skill levels and technique preferences. Blocks good for beginner or intermediate quilters will be most popular. Advanced blocks should provide detailed instructions a beginner could follow.

Quossum had some questions:
"So is this like a blog’s BoM, where one block per month is presented? Or will more than one person be a “picker” and (I presume) post a block, and makers can choose from them?"
"I noticed the first one has size options; is that going to be ongoing? If I volunteer to be a “picker,” do I have to come up with a block that can be made in various sizes like that?"
I’m interested in both doing and possibly being a picker; I like having a sort of “cool down” or easier project to look forward to each month!
Forgive the questions; I’m not familiar with this activity here on the board, and I didn’t see these addressed in the rules post. (Sorry if I missed something!)

- Yes ... one block per month
- Yes ... members can volunteer to choose and present blocks. Just send me a PM so I can keep a list of who wants to choose and in which month.

- That would be ideal, but it is not a requirement.
- I hope we can pick blocks from a variety of sites. There are so many I know I could never find all of them on my own. This is a good way for us to share sites we've found and like. I'm not sure we can always find free patterns that have instructions for more than one size. However, we can help each other figure out cutting dimensions if somebody wants to make a different size.

- I would be very excited to get volunteer pickers. When I see the choices other quilters make it inspires me to try something new. So the more pickers, the more variety, and the more fun.

I have a question also. First I remember the old BOMs and enjoyed participating in them. Question is can we title each month similar to the old ones? QB BOM for (Month 2026 and either pattern or pictures) I saw your post for the picture of the block but had a difficult search to find where you started the instructions.
Thank you for renewing this fun experience, I learned so much back in the day when I was newer to quilting.

or do you mean you had a hard time finding the thread that linked to the pattern for the block? Going forward, I'll add links to make that easier. thanks for the suggestion.

which instructions? if you refer to the thread announcing the resurrection of the BOM activity, I'll add the line to the opening posts each month.
