This is what I've pulled so far. I'm not thrilled by the black, but that's all I've got for a dark.

Will these work, IceLeopard?

Those would be great! I like how you pulled both the orange and the light blue from your focus fabric.

then choose my colors and do the same to check values.

Maybe posting our fabric choices Would be helpful. ?
Posting what you're using, and what things are looking like as you go is half the fun! So far my directions are looking like "cut [this many] 2 inch squares of fabric #1." Would it be helpful if I noted which of my fabrics this is? Like so: "cut [this many] 2 inch squares of fabric #1. [Blue]"

I think I have that green in my stash. it's a good choice,

Other combinations I considered were chocolate brown/turquoise/gold/cream and chocolate/emerald green/gold/pale green.

You might also consider 3 shades of one color and a strong contrast, like light/ medium/dark turquoise with yellow or orange.
