I found on a site that the block "Hole in the Barn Door" was popular in the 1880's and has 20 different names given to it according to Brackman's Encyclopedia of Pieced Quilt Patterns. This book, for those of us who are interested, was written by Barbara Brackman in 1993. She obviously does a lot of research on traditional quilt blocks and old quilts. It must be a fascinating book.

My information came from
http://www.fabrics.net/LaurettePatterns.asp
There is some interesting information out there. This particular article lists some other traditional pioneer quilt blocks.
