if you're going to be doing the trip around the world layout it tells you exactly which blocks fall into which section so you'll always know which color fabric to use.

since we're not doing the blocks in order across each row its easy to get lost and forget which color fabrics to use on which block in each section.

now you'll know.

then you can enter that you did it and it will tally how many blocks you've made and how many pieces of fabric have be used to make the quilt.

like jane's quilt label says exactly how many pieces of fabric she used and a lot of people like to continue with that tradition.

Thanks Klue, My DH is calling my quilt Kim's Million Dollar DJ Quilt! He thinks it is costing too much! I need some civil war F4 and was trying to decide how many I was going to need. I think I will add up the cost of his last jeeping weekend before I go shopping I can spend at least that much :-D

what an execellent idea if my DH starts to complain maybe i'll just remind him of the amount of money he pulled out of savings to get his motorcycle.

Wow this is really getting exciting. I have spent a good part of the day trying to get my room ready. Fabrics are washed and ready. Now for the room. Seems like it is never clean.
I just love the Storm at Sea Blue it will go perfectly in my bedroom I have all blue and white in there.

Bearpaw the fossil ferns are just gorgeous I would be pacing the floor waiting for those.

cheriffic 01-01-2010 06:54 PM

P.S. HAPPY NEW YEAR everyone

Esqmommy 01-01-2010 06:57 PM

Bearpaw, I love, love love your fabric choices. I agree with the post that said it will be richly colored...those types of batiks come out so pretty into quilts.

have you named your work in progress yet? A few of us have done so...

cheriffic 01-01-2010 07:09 PM

Kelly, thanks for all your info. I kinda knew all that. What someone needs to tell me is how to get that thing out of this computer. What buttons to push and what to look for. Your talking to a complete idiot here when it comes to computers!

Janstar 01-01-2010 07:46 PM

Oh, BTW, My name is 'Columbia River Jane'. How's that? Has nothing to do with my DJ but it locates me.

Ladies just be thankful those DH are there to complain. My DH told me if I came home with another piece of material he would divorce me. Quite a strong threat. Well 58 years and he didn't.

I mentioned to hubby about organising something with my LQS to get the fabric I need for this and he said "don't be silly, just buy it". So I mentioned just how much the fabric will cost and after he finished choking and his face lost that purple shade, he muttered quietly something about it being a good idea to talk to the quilt shop and organise something. LOL

OK, I am going to try and include a pic of my first block. I have never paper-pieced before, but I think I can get the hang of it lol!

Esqmommy 01-01-2010 10:02 PM

Not required, but i thought it would be nice to sort of name them in some way so we can remember who has what colorway, design etc. I have no recall now which thread it's in, but it's here in the last 2-3 days in one of the DJ threads. For example, mine is:

Modern Jane in coral/red/turquoise/brown

That's because I'm using modern print fabrics, in those colors. Others have named theirs, or are calling it something while they are working on it, but it doesn't necessarily identify the colorway. Klue is being kind enough to match up our names with the "master" list of DJ quilters she puts out every once in a while.

I bought a charm pack of all the fossil ferns to make sure I liked the fabrics before I bought them. Good thing, too - the red that I picked was way darker in person.

Here's a pic of the colors I'll be using:

Awesome! Are you doing a white background?

Good for you mama! It looks great!

kluedesigns 01-02-2010 01:08 AM

cjt mama

it look great - i'd say you have paper piecing under control.

bravo!

you would click on the downloaded button. then it will open up in excel and you can save it to your computer.

i've been keeping all my jane stuff right on my desktop since i use it a few times a day.

BlueChicken 01-02-2010 02:44 AM

I have a question.... anyone want to have a quick look at L10 and make suggestions on how to put that little sucker together?

"That Quilt" site hasn't made it yet, and it's intriguing me. So far, my best guess is that it's going to be a hand sewing job.

I'm intrigued by it because it's in the set I was putting together to test my sashing... I ended up making the blocks on the other side because I couldn't figure that one out.

i'm doing to redraft this block when it comes time but here's the general idea.

i would turn the center of units I & H into hourglass units so they can be paper pieced more easily.

then i'll enter machine stitch or hand stitch the Y seams around the center square.

general PP idea of L10

BlueChicken 01-02-2010 03:40 AM

I'm not looking forward to some of them! lol

Another curly question... while I'm being a pain....

blocks like H1 that's in next week's lot, there are pieces of the same colour that are pieced when it seems they could be done as one single piece of fabric, especially in paper piecing. The seam makes sense on a line drawing, but not when the colours are all the same.

kluedesigns 01-02-2010 03:51 AM

yes, sometimes i just take liberties with the design because it seems she just has a seam because she didn't have a piece big enough to cover.

like i I9 i didn't put on that very tiny triangles on the end - it just seemed silly to me when it was the exact same color fabric.

i didn't alter the seams of H1 though.

i agree some blocks are going to be real killers - i'm redrafting as much as i can into paper piecing.

kluedesigns 01-02-2010 03:53 AM

also - there's that entire section of blocks in the library that are center variations.

i always looks thru them before deciding on the final one i'll use in the quilt.

BlueChicken 01-02-2010 04:02 AM

I didn't put those little triangles on I9 either.

I'm torn for H1 though, seeing as they're bigger pieces in the centre of the block. I'll have to think about it. :-)

I haven't been looking at the variations though, I should start.

I'm off to bed now, it's 1am again ... no matter how many times I say we're going to bed early for a change, it doesn't happen. When work starts again it's going to be hellish in the mornings! LOL

Thanks for all your time klue, this wouldn't be happening without you. :-)

I did the tiny triangles but changed the color, I figured if I was going to sew such a tiny piece you should be able to see it.

everyone is doing great and fabric choices are awesome. I still have not started I have a few things I need to finish before I start on something new. Kepp movin on

bearpaw 01-02-2010 06:33 AM

Thanks everyone - I can't wait till the fabrics get here!!!

Esq - I was thinking of maybe "Jane's Ferns", but I also like Bettia's name "Fossil Jane". I'll have to decide! Thanks for the idea Bettia!

Sheree - tha background is the tan color on the bottom of the pic - it's hard to see, it blends in with the table.

sewsewquilter 01-02-2010 07:26 AM

I have changed the excel spreadspread for a diangle row color layout. I am going to do two janes. Without the excel spreadspread I don't think I could keep my color layout correct. If you do each row in a different color it will take 25 colors. You will have to have excel to open this spreadspread.

I also changed the excel spread Klue posting on page 30-something (I think) for Trip Around the World color layout. It is on page 117.

Hmmm... Now I have to name it too? Lol.. Pink and black always make me think of the 50;s, maybe something along that line of thought

Esqmommy 01-02-2010 07:30 AM

I love your block Mama! Great job on the PP - it's confusing at first, but once you get it, your gold!

Thank you, I am almost done with block #2... Yay!

Esqmommy 01-02-2010 12:46 PM

Be careful Mama, you'll end up like me ignoring your kids and working on little tiny blocks!! LOL, just kidding!!! It's addicting though, isn't it? I hope I can keep up my enthusiasm...it's a long road ahead!
