Of course you can use cotton! :-)

I think they mean for the applique... hand applique is better done with very fine thread, silk is recommended but over here it's hard to get and rather expensive. I use a synthetic thread that's really fine, just as strong, and works great.

Ohhh, only for hand qpplique and hand quilting, I assume?

BC - if you want, you can tell me what you want, I can get it and ship it to you...

i use silk in my machine for applique and quilting too. silk is a very strong thread and can stand up to machine use.

i like YLI silk.

i use this chart often to match a thread type to a needle and a use

What is the recommended care for silk thread?

Can it be machine washed?

Machine dried?

yes, it can - but i don't use it for quilting on utility quilts but i will for applique.

i save silk machine quilting strictly for my art quilts because its very expensive to quilt with and my art quilting are never put in the washing machine.

For those of you who like YLI silk thread, I highly recommend this web site. The prices are the best I've found, and delivery is prompt.
