#10 mystery quilt train ride - more scraps!!
2 Attachment(s)
Welcome all returning riders and to those new to our little mysteries, to another mystery quilt train ride. I know this is the third scrappy in a row, but all the chatter on the previous threads of # 8 and #9 were overwhelmingly in favor of another scrappy, so here we go again. This one is sort of a controlled scrappy, as the blocks will be coordinated in color.
As always, I feel all levels of quilters will enjoy this mystery. Club car is ready for our informal get-together, and hot and iced coffee and tea are available. So all new and returning passengers, climb onboard and make yourself comfortable. This one will be a little different, as I am giving requirements as to what you will need to make 3 different sizes about 52 x 20 table runner, a wall hanging or table topper 44-46 square (or smaller if you make smaller borders), and a large cuddly lap quilt of about 60 x 80 which can easily be made into a queen bed by additional border(s) or more blocks. The sizes given will depend on how wide you want your final borders. Many of you have told me they wish to have made smaller or larger quilts than I had planned in the previous mysteries, so maybe this will solve that question. First, pick out your background. I chose a beige/tan tone-on-tone print. You will need Ύ yard for the table runner, 1-1/2 yard for the wall hanging/table topper, and 2-3/4 yard for the large lap/queen. My suggestion would be something neutral. Each block will have a color theme, and you can see I have chosen reds, yellows, greens, etc. And the blocks dont have to be all different, especially if you are going for the large size. You will be making 4 blocks for a table runner, 9 blocks for a wall hanging, and 24 blocks for the large lap. If you look at my red pile, it can be used in different configurations -- perhaps the darkest color will be a 4-1/2 square for Color A with the other 2 colors for B and C, and another block could be made with the medium or the light as the 4-1/2 square. This week, all I will tell you is that for each block you will need three colors A, B and C -- plus your background fabric. The widths given are exact, so dont for example choose a strip of fabric 2-1/4 wide, hoping you can use it it will NOT work. Color A one 4-1/2 square piece Color B one strip of fabric 4-1/2 x 20 long Color C one strip of fabric 2-1/2 wide by 20 And with this, I will leave you so you can go off and delve into those scrap bins. Happy hunting. While you are in your scrap bins, set aside any small pieces of colorful fabric that you may find, whether you are using it for A B or C or not. These will be used in a scrappy border. |
Big Thank You, Judy!! Sounds like fun!!
|
Thank you! May the fun begin.
I just dropped of scones, butter, and homemade marmalade in the club car. I noticed someone had already made a pot of coffee -- many thanks! -- Oops! I notice that Judy made the coffee -- again, many thanks. |
Step 1 printed, now to look through my stash and decide. Might be tomorrow, baby shower and bar-b-que today for our soon to be twin boys grandchildren. First babies for my step daughter so we are all really excited for them to arrive.
|
Yay Jaba! How exciting!!
|
I left chocolate chip muffins and apple slices in the club car. Now I'm ready to talk scraps!!
|
I haven't taken a picture of the last mystery---I did use scraps but my overall look is not very scrappy...I am anxious to get started on this one....I already have my background fabric---went with white tone on tone....going to use all brights which is totally out of my comfort zone....my friend that comes over to do these mysterys with me promised to make me use brights LOL LOL...going for the larger size.....I hope to be a little better this time with posting pictures...
|
Judy: Love it when you play with values. Especially intrigued by the fact that they are interchangeable. Ohhhhh.....next Sat is so far away.
|
RJ, congrats - get out of that old comfort zone! White with the brights will be stunning! Make sure to post your pix on the last mystery -- I love to go back and see what has been added to that thread.
Belfry, jaba, bluebonnet and Emma, welcome back. I also had an idea of using 4 blocks the same to make a table runner. Won't be scrappy, but might try it after finishing some charity half-done tops that I want to get done this weekend. |
Question: Can the 20" strips be spliced to reach that length? I have a lot of 12- 18" lengths in the 4-1/2" wide but very little 20" lengths. I hate to think I'll have to cut up FQs to get the 20" lengths, and end up adding to my scrap totes.

Thanks for another fun challenge! Part of my challenge to myself is to only make a table runner....we'll see how THAT goes :D
|
Belfry: I am limiting myself to blues and greens although there are splashes of other colors in many of my scraps. My scraps in those colors take up five wire baskets, not even mentioning the under one yard cuts that are in my stash. Don't know how it is going to work out but am encouraged by the fact that Judy is thinking of using the same ones in a table runner. Regardless, always fun.
I am going to hold off deciding on the background fabric. Thing of a pastel green or blue. But want to make sure something more neutral wouldn't work better. Judy, do you have any advise? |
I am going for a large scrappy but I am also thinking about a table runner with the blues. I've been needing one.
|
Glad you're with us, RJ. Looking forward to seeing your brights quilt. 😄

on the colors. does the 4 1/2" square need to be darkest, what about the strips, darker or lighter. still a bit confused here.thanks

see you next saturday |
ooo. sunlite, get better soon, we need our head cheerleader in tip top shape for this short trip.
|
I will probably just follow along with this one. I still need to finish the last three plus numerous other projects.
I will be copying the steps because I will be doing it in the future. Thanks Judy for being a great leader! Connie |
I am ready for instructions but still have Numbers 7,8, and 9 to complete. Love to ride and chat with all you folks. The food is a Special Bonus !
|
After I finish my orange and tourquise quilt top today. I will start gathering my fabric. I plan on making the larger throw top. Enlarging it on the sides about 10". At least that is the plan at this stage. Have not decided on colors yet. Happy sorting everyone!!!!!
i left some blueberry and chocolate muffins with cream cheese to spread on top in the club car. Enjoy everyone!!!! :) |
sounds like this mystery is off to a good start -- lots of goodies, I see. We never lack for food on this train, do we?
|
Thanks so much Judy for posting instructions for a table runner also. My table is kinda short. Will a runner made with 3 blocks look odd? Thanks again for doing another train ride. Hugs Mary:p
|
Hey Judy. Just so you know, I am hopping aboard for the table runner. See you in the dining car.
|
ooh! Varying sizes! Which shall I choose...............!! Tried contacting Sulabug, still MIA at this point. I'm sure I'll hear from her eventually! going to have to ponder this one! If you're looking for me, just go to the studio & look under the scrap piles!
Double chocolate bundt cake in the club car for everyone! |
Nearing the finish on #9. Hope to hop on train #10 next week.
|
I'm almost finished with the #9 top. I'm making it a lot bigger. But I still have #7 to finish.
Judy, I like the idea of the different sizes. I will probably just go with the table runner with this one for now. I can always make a bigger one later. Thanks for all you do for us. You're the best!!! |
Nope, not odd at all, a 3 block will look fine.
And those who have a loooooong table, you can make 5 blocks.

Woo hoo, Florence is back!
Klaws, when you see how your table runner goes together, I'll be in the club car taking side bets that you go ahead and make a bigger one. :D Cindy, let us know when you hear from Sulabug, I miss her beautiful florals, and the happy smiles she freely passes around. |
I'm doing a slow hop on for a table runner, this time.
I had a MRI yesterday that has left me with a Bad ole headache today. I put Apple pie and ice cream in the dinning car(my comfort foods) |

I'm going to start out with 12 blocks and then decide where to go from there. Either a wall hanging and small table runner or a half-sized throw quilt, or..... My neutral is one I've had for ages with a rather high contrast outline flower throughout. I think it will work well in this quilt. Oops. It shows up blue in this pic but is a true tan.

Belfry - beautiful fabrics and your "neutral" is lovely.
|
Well, I'm on board for this one too. Hope to finish the border for #9 this week and will be off and will be off and running for the train.
|
I'm trying to finish up #9. It's a queen sized and am working on a twisted ribbon border. I hope I can keep up and do a table runner with #10. This is so much fun.
|
Judy, Thanks so much for the table runner size. Just my size for this trip.
Belfrybat, What a gorgeous selection of fabric. It's looking good already. |
Belfrybat, do you remember the dress last month that was tan and blue or was it gold and black. same with your tan/blue!!
Judy, sorry, I didn't pick up on the color thing. sometimes i'm thick or just didn't pick it up. sorry. thanks for doing these mysteries for us. |
