It would be a new experience for me also. But, the way I had in mind is like this link (keep your fingers crossed that I can link it). Where the block is made, quilted then the quilted blocks are joined. I have seen it done before. The link won't work but it is instructables.com Quilt-As-You-Go-Quilt.

I would like to join this group and do the project. I have the book and the paper and am taking Carol Doak's Craftsy class. I am enjoying that but have let it rest while I do Christmas stuff. But, I will look forward to January. Thank you for starting this project and seeking followers.

Toverly & NYgal: when I do QAYG I do each block individually and only quilt the block and batting. I cut the batting about an inch or so larger than my block.To connect the next block I add the sashing to the block then trim the batting so it meets in the middle of the sashing. I use batting tape on the sashing to hold it flat. I do each row this way. After the whole quilt top/batting is assembled, I spray baste the backing and sew down and across all the sashing strips 1/4" in from each edge. The backing looks very plain-looks like a grid from quilting in the sashing. This eliminates all the hand sewing of the blocks on the back and it lays flatter (at least for me) than the traditional QAYG method. I hope this makes sense--I made this up trying to manage the 1.5 million blocks in the FWS quilt. Just kidding--how many were there, Carrie? At least 100.

Jan--thanks for the "how you do QAYG"...there are several different methods. I think I might try your method for this quilt. I didn't join the "group" until PC, but I know there are over 100--6" in the FWS quilt.

Thanks for the how to QAYG. I did it once with the backing and the hand sewing was a pain! I think I'll try it your way. It would be great to have it quilting while we go.

Carrie, 7 yards background fabric is right. I think it was meanmom who told me as I had no clue how much to buy.

Jan, does this technique work the same way with paper piecing blocks? I watched a few You Tube videos on QAYG but none were using paper pieced blocks. Just straight seamed, simple blocks. I don't think we will be stitching our paper piecing with the batting behind it. So if I get this right..we'll do the paper pieced block and THEN add the batting and do the "quilting" how ever way we choose then do the QAYG process? Hope this is coming across well. lol Thanks so much for your input in helping the rest of us.

Nygal, yes, first you make the block, remove the paper, then add the batting and do the quilting.
