2014--50 Fabulous Paper-Pieced Stars BOW

************

The first week in January we will be starting a block of the week using Carol Doak’s book “50 Fabulous Paper-Pieced Stars”. Our goal is one block per week. We will start with Alabama and end in December with Wyoming.

If you have this book, please join us. If you’ve already started, but got side-tracked, please jump in where you are and share your blocks.

This is a place to ask questions, share tips to make the blocks easier, and share pictures of your completed blocks and quilts. There will be no patterns or tutorials given and there is no sign-up required. Participants must purchase their own copy of the book. Participants are not permitted to share copies of the book's contents.

Do as few or as many as you like.

Me too. I will try!!!

mirabelle 11-28-2013 10:01 PM

Count me in Carriem, have already made the first block. Will be making my blocks 10 inches, just for something different. Also this will give me more options when putting it together.

Anael 11-28-2013 10:43 PM

Count me in too Carrie, I hope to be able to quilt again in January :) I made a few blocks already, about 5 or 6, I'm not sure. They're fun to make but lots of work!

mirabelle 11-29-2013 12:32 AM

Anael so good to hear that you are going to join us. Hope you are feeling a little better.

Anael 11-29-2013 02:39 AM

Mirabelle, this one has been on my list for quite a while now. So I hope I don't fall off the wagon :D
Surgery will be coming Tuesday, have to be there 9.30 am my time. Let's hope all goes well and I hope to be home on Friday!

Anael 11-29-2013 03:28 AM

Carrie, for the Foundation Factory 50 Stars, do you know if that's based on Foundation Factory or can you use it as stand alone?

BeckyPotter 11-29-2013 04:20 AM

Hi Everybody I would like to know if this a good book for a beginner. I have never done any paper piecing. Thanks Becky

Retired Fire Chief 11-29-2013 05:09 AM

What a super idea, I have the book, bought it a few months ago and actually made 3 North Carolina star blocks for my partner in the quilting bee swap. I want to jump in, great way to keep me in line, I need pushing often and this way I can make one of each star, I look through the book often and have never been able to decide which one I love the best! Thank you, when do we start???

janRN 11-29-2013 05:31 AM

Thank you, Carrie, for leading this project. I have about 15 done and love these blocks. Now where did I put them?????

QuiltingNinaSue 11-29-2013 05:38 AM

I have the book, foundation disk, fabric, and ready to go, Carrie! (Or is the foundation disk Dear Jane? I can get confused easy.

Anael 11-29-2013 06:32 AM

BeckyPotter, you might want to practice before you start with the Carol Doak Stars. They're not that hard but very time consuming and lots of tiny pieces. There are great tuts on the internet, just google paperpiecing and you'll find a lot of them.

QNS, there's no foundation disk with the 50 Stars book. There's a Yahoo group and when you sign up you can download the pdf files of all 50 blocks so you won't have to scan them yourself.

createfourpaws 11-29-2013 07:26 AM

I have the book, got some of Carol's paper. Need to load the dics in the book and see what it is. I am looking forward to working on this project.

Hope everyone had a great Thanksgiving.

carriem 11-29-2013 09:21 AM

Hello!

Looks like we are going to have a great group starting/continuing in January. First I want to let everyone know, Quilt Pro has the Foundation Factory 50-Stars on sale for 50% off (shows in "cart") if you are thinking about making your blocks a different size than the 12" it is a great tool. http://www.quiltpro.com/page/Foundat...0_Fab_Mainpage

Now I will try to answer questions:

newbee3--yes, you are more than welcome to join...glad to have you. :)

Anael--you can use the foundation factory as a stand alone program

BeckyPotter--if you do some practice blocks, then I think you would be able to handle these. Here is a link to a simple starting block: http://quilterscache.com/StartQuilti...tingthree.html

Retired Fire Chief--we will start with the first block (Alabama) and share pictures the first week of January.

Jan--hope you find your blocks and are sure to show us!

QNS--foundation factory (download or cd) is for the 50 stars; DJ has the EQ disk

createfourpaws 11-29-2013 09:48 AM

Thanks for the heads up about the 50% off sale, I just bought it. Will be printing them out so I can get started the first of the year.

toverly 11-29-2013 10:52 AM

This sounds like a great "New Years Resolution". I think I will get the book and join in! Thanks for such a great idea!

Anael 11-29-2013 11:12 AM

Thanks Carrie but what I mean is, if I buy one of the Carol Doak cd's, do I still need Foundation Factory as well?

CajunBear 11-29-2013 11:42 AM

oh Man this is tempting! Have the book and templates! Just not enough time!

Hugs,
Betty

carriem 11-29-2013 11:46 AM

Which of Carol Doak's Cds are you looking at? I am pretty sure Foundation Factory is just a general term for different stand alone programs on the quilt-pro website.

There are 3 Foundation Factory programs on quilt-pro that are Carol Doak's:

Carol Doak Designer Edition
50 Fabulous Stars
40 Bright and Bold

All are "Foundation Factory"; each is a stand alone program.

Hope I am understanding and it makes sense to you. :)

Anael 11-29-2013 12:13 PM

I was looking at the 40 Bright and Bold Blocks. Maybe I'll purchase it while on sale :)

Oh well, that one is NOT for sale.....:(

gramquilter2 11-29-2013 12:56 PM

I am going to look for my book and hope to join in too.

carriem 11-29-2013 01:44 PM

Aneal--it is on sale too (I bought it and the 50 stars both late last night)...they don't show the sale price until after you enter your name and shipping info (before payment).

Welcome gramquilter2

nygal 11-29-2013 02:06 PM

Oh I will happily join in!! I've had the book for a year or more and a brand new pack of her paper. I am currently in another paper pieced BOM (using Batiks) but one a month is too slow moving for me!! I'd be thrilled to work on these 50 blocks with everyone. I will have to decide what fabrics I want to use for mine. Decisions, decisions....

JeanieG 11-29-2013 11:23 PM

I have the book, and have downloaded the Foundation Factory Program. One block a week sounds doable (I hope)! I have actually done a couple of these Stars when I was doing the Star BOM on this board a couple of years ago! What color(s) is everyone going to be doing theirs with???

djmat 11-29-2013 11:54 PM

I knew I should not have loaned out that book, ugh!

Anael 11-30-2013 12:16 AM

Carrie, I didn't proceed, only put it in my cart. I guess it's too late now.........when you posted your message I was sleeping already! Next time :) They will be having a sale again, I'm sure!

Anael 11-30-2013 12:21 AM

YESSSSSSSSSS it still worked with discount :D :D Thanks Carrie ! !

quilting nurse 11-30-2013 04:36 AM

I am going to look for my book and be ready!!!Love to paper piece.

happy grandma 11-30-2013 05:41 AM

I want to play too. I have had the book for some time and now is as good of time as any to start. Love a quilt along.

Geri B 11-30-2013 05:49 AM

I don't understand something here......CD's book and computer program, or just book(amazon has for $20),or just that comp program or what. I might be interested, but why would I need to buy both carols book w patterns and the comp program? Sorry only had one cuppa this morning.......need more

QuiltingNinaSue 11-30-2013 05:57 AM

The book and disk are the story of designing the stars. From Foundation you get the disk that you can 'size' your way...and paper piece the pattern or not....like a 10 inch block or 12 inch block...Geri B.

Our breakfast is over; made Mashed potato waffles with buttermilk that guests said melted in your mouth with hot homemade maple syrup.

franniekay 11-30-2013 06:20 AM

ordered book today
:o

DottyD 11-30-2013 06:45 AM

Sounds good - I am interested too !

Anael 11-30-2013 06:46 AM

QNS, homemade maple syrup? Recipe please :) ???

MaggieLou 11-30-2013 06:47 AM

I'll give it a try. I just bought the book a few weeks ago. I've never done paper piecing so this will be a new experience.

DottyD 11-30-2013 06:49 AM

Hello Anael - do I remember you from the Dear Jane group ?

paperpieceme 11-30-2013 07:16 AM

Hi, I would love to try this challenge, one block a month should be do-able.

thanks
theresa

toverly 11-30-2013 07:21 AM

Just ordered from Quilt Pro, the download with a back up CD (to be mailed) came in at $13 and some change. What a great idea! I am planning on scrappy with Batiks. Now to figure out what size block. Looking forward to getting to know y'all thru quilting.
